Before 2010
From 1987 to 2006, the Guidelines document was published by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) with assistance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The 1987, 1992–93, 1996–97, 2001, and 2006 editions are available as downloadable, searchable PDFs.
GUIDELINES FOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF HEALTH CARE FACILITIES, 2006 EDITION
How to reference the 2006 edition:
The reorganization of the 2006 Guidelines included implementation of a new numbering system, which placed the chapter number at the top of the page and section numbers in the text. To make the document easy to read, it was decided not to include full section references in the text itself but only in cross-references and in the index and to depend on users to add the chapter number when they reference the document. However, because users do not always do this and the same section numbers often appear in multiple chapters, this approach has caused some confusion. Therefore, please note that users must provide complete section references (chapter number [hyphen] section number, such as 2.1-3.1.1) to adequately reference the 2006 edition.
